1420 Avian Ophthalmology – Principles and Application, Rüdiger Korbel, Prof. DrMedVet, Dr. Habile, Dipl ECZM
4 hour workshop; offered in a.m. only; class limited to 24 participants
Ocular disorders in birds are of great importance, both due to aspects of vision as well as to the fact that commonly they hint at numerous systemic disorders, which may even be transferable to man (i.e. Salmonellosis, Mycobacteriosis etc.). The lab will provide the practitioner with a practical review of suitable instrumentation following a step-by-step tutorial through the complete avian ophthalmological examination procedure as a reliable basis for diagnoses and therapy of ocular disorders in birds. Within the proposed practical lab diurnal and nocturnal raptors, both healthy and diseased eyes will be used in order to demonstrate both physiological as well as pathological situations.

*1425 Avian Sedation and Local Analgesia, Angela Lennox, DVM, Dipl ABVP-Avian
2 hour workshop; offered in p.m. only; class limited to 30 participants
This lab is for practioners who would like to add sedation as an option for bird patients. Using live psittacines, we will sedate, place catheters, collect diagnostic samples, administer local analgesia, and perform other minor procedures.

*1430 Bandaging Techniques for Avian Species, Julia Whittington, DVM
2 hour workshop; offered in p.m. only; class limited to 20 participants
This lab is ideal for technicians and practitioners interested in practicing bandaging skills utilized in the care of avian species. Techniques taught will include the proper application of a wing wrap, body wrap, tape splint, ball bandage, lateral splint, and tail guard. Wound care and the use of protective collars will also be discussed.

1435 Basic Magnification Surgery, Avery Bennett, DVM, MS, Dipl ACVS
4 hour workshop; offered in a.m. only; class limited to 24 participants
This practical lab will train participants in the use of microsurgical instruments and the basics of working under magnification. Various tasks will be performed, along with exercises to develop the ability to perform surgery under magnification.

FULL 1445 Ferret Abdominal Surgery,
Avery Bennett, DVM, MS, Dipl ACVS
4 hour workshop; offered in p.m. only; class limited to 24 participants
In this lab participants will perform an exploratory laparotomy to review the
basic intra-abdominal anatomy and evaluate for any lesions that may be present. Bilateral adrenalectomy will be performed so participants can compare right adrenalectomy with left adrenalectomy. A partial pancreatectomy will be performed by removing the left limb of the pancreas. Different methods for obtaining a liver biopsy will be evaluated. A partial splenectomy will be performed. An enterotomy will be closed transversely in order not to compromise the lumen size. The urinary bladder will be used as a model to learn how to omentalize a large paraprostatic cyst.

FULL 1450 Reproductive Tract Surgery of the Hen, Scott Echols, DVM, Dipl ABVP-Avian and Brian Speer, DVM, Dipl ABVP-Avian, Dipl ECZM-Avian
