*Denotes labs that are open to qualified technicians.

400a Avian Ultrasound Pre-Lab Lecture, Michelle Fabiani, DVM, Dipl ACVR and Natalie Antinoff, DVM, Dipl ABVP-Avian
This lecture will serve as an introduction to the use of ultrasounds for all species, but the emphasis will be specific to birds. Learn proper use of instrumentation and tips for optimizing images from a board certified radiologist. Slide presentation will demonstrate how to identify normal structures and improve ultrasonographic images. Images of commonly seen diseases will be provided along with pathology correlates. *This prelab is essential for optimizing the use of the equipment in the lab. Material covered in the lecture will not be repeated in the lab. Price included in registration fee for #400 Avian Ultrasound Lab.

400 Avian Ultrasound Lab, Michelle Fabiani, DVM, Dipl ACVR and Natalie Antinoff, DVM, Dipl ABVP-Avian
2 hour lab; class limited to 12 participants
This lab will provide participants the opportunity to perform ultrasounds on birds. Tips will be given for detection of organs, including identification of liver, reproductive tract, ventriculus, small intestine, and cloaca. Participants will practice obtaining better ultrasound images using a variety of probes under the direction of a board certified radiologist. Examples of abnormals will be provided via the use of power point slides. There will also be a discussion of identification of reproductive structures in hens, including differentiating eggs from cysts. **Prelab lecture #400a is required; material presented in the prelab will not be repeated during the laboratory session.

*405 Anesthesia, Diagnostic, and Treatment Techniques, Laurel Degernes, DVM, MPH, Dipl ABVP-Avian and Marcy Souza, DVM, MPH, Dipl ABVP-Avian
4 hour lab; class limited to 20 participants
This lab provides practical experiences with avian PE and handling, isoflurane anesthesia (induction, intubation, monitoring), venipuncture, cloacal/choanal sampling, crop feeding tube placement, wing and leg/toe bandaging, IV and intraosseous catheter placement, and airsac cannulation.

410 Avian Ophthalmology - Principles and Application, Ruediger Korbel, Prof. DrMedVet
4 hour lab; offered in a.m. only; class limited to 24 participants
Ocular disorders in birds are of great importance due to aspects of vision as well as due to the fact that commonly they hint at systemic disorders, which may even be transferable to man (i.e. Salmonellosis, Mycobacteriosis etc.) This lab will enable the practitioner to go through the complete avian opthalmological examination procedure as a reliable basis for diagnoses and therapy of ocular disorders in birds. Within the proposed practical lab diurnal and nocturnal raptors, both with healthy and diseased eyes will be used in order to provide the practitioner with knowledge of physiological as well as pathological situations.

415 Basic Endoscopy, Michael Taylor, DVM
4 hour lab; offered in a.m. only; class limited to 12 participants
The ability to utilize rigid endoscopy in avian medicine is of critical importance in day-to-day clinical practice. This tool, however, is associated with a steep learning curve and cannot be self-taught easily. This laboratory will introduce the veterinarian to rigid endoscopic equipment care and handling, and utilizing the domestic pigeon as a model, will teach the basic approaches to the coelomic cavity. Initially, inanimate training aids will be utilized to demonstrate basic instrument handling techniques and to develop basic skills.

420 Basic Magnification Surgery, Avery Bennett, DVM, MS, Dipl ACVS
4 hour lab; offered in a.m. only; class limited to 24 participants
The goal is to learn how to use micro-instruments under magnification. Basic equipment and principles of surgery on small patients will be reviewed. Various exercises will be performed and the Ellman Radiosurgical Unit will also be used.

425 Advanced Avian Soft Tissue Surgery, Avery Bennett, DVM, MS, Dipl ACVS
4 hour lab; offered in p.m. only; class limited to 24 participants
Instrumentation and equipment will not be reviewed. Participants will perform cloacotomy, ventral celiotomy, enterotomy, left lateral celiotomy, ventriculus biopsy, salpingohysterectomy or castration, and tracheotomy. Must be familiar with magnification surgery.

430 Advanced Avian Endosurgery, Stephen Divers, BVetMed, DZooMed, Dipl ACZM, DipECZM (herp), FRCVS, and Scott Stahl, DVM, Dipl ABVP-Avian
8 hour lab; offered 12-8 p.m. only; class limited to 12 participants
Endosurgery (minimally-invasive surgery within the avian coelom) offers considerable advantages over traditional surgical approaches. Video illustrated lectures precede a wet-lab that will concentrate on endoscopic orchidectomy and salpingohysterectomy in pigeons. The future of avian surgery starts here!

*435 Clinical Avian Hematology Lab, J Jill Heatley, DVM, MS, ABVP-ACZM and Karen Russell, DVM, PhD, Dipl ACVP
2 hour lab; offered in a.m. only; class limited to 20 participants
This clinically applied hematology lab will include venipuncture sites, white blood cell counting techniques, a review of avian cell morphology and discussion of multiple causes of white blood cell abnormalities in birds. A must for every avian practitioner even if you send your blood samples to outside labs. Presentation includes a laminate for easy reference of avian white blood cells and parasites.
This lab sponsored by Lafeber

*440 Necropsy Technique and Gross Lesion Identification in Birds, Michael Garner, DVM, Dipl ACVP
4 hour lab; class limited to 30 participants
This laboratory will review the Avian Necropsy Techniques, using avian cadavers. An accompanying PowerPoint Program will illustrate common lesions encountered at various stages of the necropsy.

445 Orthopedic Management of the Avian Wing: Antebrachium and Manus, Susan Orosz, PhD, DVM, Dipl ABVP-Avian, Dipl ECZM-Avian and Julia Ponder, DVM
4 hour lab; class limited to 24 participants
This lab will concentrate on the anatomy, surgical management, and physical therapy of the bones of the antebrachium and metacarpals. Bandaging of the wing and amputation will also be added this year.
This lab sponsored by Lafeber

*450 Practical Application of Animal Training, Barbara Heidenreich, BS Zoology
2 hour lab; offered in a.m. only; class limited to 12 participants
Practice hands on application of positive reinforcement training strategies. Participants will practice approaching parrots, assessing reinforcers and training behaviors. These behaviors may include stepping onto a scale, towel restraint, accepting oral medications and more.

455 Rabbit Dental Lab, Richard Nye, DVM, Matthew Johnston, VMD, Dipl ABVP-Avian, Tia Greenberg, DVM, Bianca Zaffarano, DVM, and Henk DeCock, DVM
