200 Dinosaurs Past and Present: An Avian Veterinarians Guide to ‘Modern’ Dinosaurs, Phil Manning, BSc, MSc, PhD
Birds, or Avian theropods as most paleontologist prefer, inherited many dinosaurian characters. These ancestral traits have the potential to breath life into fossil bones. When combined with extant crocodilians, dinosaurs have a much-needed backstop to the extant phylogenetic bracket (EPB) constraining their biology, physiology and possibly functional morphology. Paleontology has been revolutionized by the anatomical hindsight that extant species are providing. The paradigm shifts occurring in the science have been further refined with the employment of new techniques and technologies, from synchrotron rapid-scan x-ray fluorescence of Archaeopteryx feathers to the evolutionary algorithms that help determine the gait and speed of dinosaurs. Even super-computers and x-ray micro-tomography are permitting the reconstruction of the mechanical behavior of long-extinct animals, with the help of our extant avian friends.
