San Diego Zoo Day Trip
Saturday, July 31, 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. (bus will stage outside hotel at 8:45 a.m.)
$45 per adult; $35 per child (ages 3-12); children under 3 at no charge
The San Diego Zoo is more than a zoo: it is a sanctuary for thousands of animals, a landscape of rare plants from all climates and a living classroom that entertains as well as educates. Learn about animals that lived in Southern California 12,000 years ago and meet their living counterparts at The Harry and Grace Steele Elephant Odyssey. The new 7.5-acre multispecies habitat features elephants, California condors, jaguars and more. It offers guests insight about the Zoo’s conservation efforts to protect wildlife from becoming extinct like the mammoth and saber-toothed cat.
Don’t forget to visit the international famous giant panda family. Home to five giant pandas, the San Diego Zoo has had a love affair with giant pandas ever since two of the black-and-white bears came for a short visit in 1987. In 1996 a female named Bai Yun arrived and has given birth to five cubs, including the youngster she is raising now. Come see the pandas and learn about the Zoo’s panda conservation efforts.
There are many ways to see the zoo: guided bus tour, Skyfari aerial tran, and specially designed viewing areas for children. The Zoo has an array of restaurants from gourmet to casual as well as a variety of shops. Tour includes round trip transportation between the park and hotel, parking, and Zoo admission.
Conservation Evening
Avian Conservation from the Pacific Ocean to the Salton Sea: Dessert, Speakers, and Live Birds of Prey
Saturday, July 31, 7:00-10:00 p.m.
$25 per person; Maximum people: 125
All profits from the event will be provided back to the supporting conservation programs.
From the urbanized coast to parched lonely desert, Southern California presents many unique avian species and offers unique challenges to avian conservation. We have gathered three speakers to give us a taste of the birds and conservation issues unique to this region. Dr. Doug Barnam from USGS will give us a look at the Salton Sea and the habitat recovery efforts. Dr. Heather Nevill will discuss seabird rehabilitation and her efforts to lead the cleanup of hazardous trash from Southern California beaches. And, for the finale, live birds of prey will be presented by Dr. Scott Weldy and his colleagues from Orange County Bird of Prey Center.
The event starts at 7:00 pm—plenty of time for you to get dinner on your own and then join us for dessert (ice cream sandwiches and yogurt bars) while we listen and learn. After the talks, stay and enjoy a drink (cash bar) while we have an informal meet-and-greet session with the speakers. All profits from the event will be provided back to the supporting conservation programs.

ATTENTION SPOUSES AND GUESTS—Join other guests and enjoy the San Diego City tour and lunch in Old Town!
San Diego is a vast city with many attractions, and with the conference hotel located downtown, you are sure to enjoy the area while others are in sessions! Your fee includes many activities during the conference week: Guest Tour, entry into the exhibit hall, the Ice Cream Social, President’s Reception, one continental breakfast, and Wednesday lunch. Andrew Barron, spouse of AAV President-Elect and Education Chair, Dr. Heather Barron, will be the Guest Program Host this year and is excited to share with you a fun filled week of activities!
The guest tour will be a San Diego city tour! A coach bus will drive our group around the city of San Diego, where we will view many of the city’s landmarks including the Gas Lamp District and local attractions. Our first stop will be to La Jolla (whose name means “The Jewel”), a town that has the tantalizing charm of a Mediterranean Isle, unique shops and breathtaking views of the Pacific. Downtown boasts dozens of shops, art galleries, and specialty boutiques. The view of the azure blue Pacific Ocean is amazing and if we’re lucky, we may have a chance to view some of La Jolla’s furriest locals—seals! These endearing mammals are dotted along the coastline, especially near the Children’s Pool, a shallow tide-pool popular with the locals that the seals have claimed as their own. It is not hard to see why La Jolla is truly the jewel of San Diego!
Our next stop will be Coronado—once the playground of presidents and princesses! The Hotel Del Coronado holds many stories and was the filming site for the legendary Marilyn Monroe film “Some Like It Hot.” Movie stars weren’t the only residents of the hotel. British royalty also called it home. The Duke and Duchess of Windsor were guests, and the Duchess even has a building on the hotel grounds named after her—the Duchess of Windsor Cottage. We will see the house where Frank L. Baum, author of the Wizard of Oz books, spent winters. He wrote many of the books right in Coronado!
Then it’s on to Old Town, the site of the city’s original settlement where many of the old adobes and frame houses are still standing. Mexican culture is plentiful here with quaint shops selling bright and colorful artwork and souvenirs. You will have time in Old Town for shopping and lunch.
The last stop on our trip will be to Balboa Park, considered one of the most beautiful, diversified and culturally enriching parks in North America. The park is filled with lovely Spanish style architecture which was built for the very first World Fair in 1915. Balboa Park is also home to 14 museums, botanical gardens, and many gourmet restaurants.
Tour Includes: Transportation on motor coach, guided city tour, stops at all locations, and gratuity.
President’s Reception
Wednesday, August 3, 5:30-7:00 p.m.
As the last event of the AAV Main Conference, this reception will be a festive gala designed to provide time for visiting with other registrants. The reception will be held on the beautiful outdoor Coronado Terrace and will include a brief program that features the installation of new AAV officers as well as a few important awards. The President’s Reception is being held early this year so that you may have time to dine at one of the many great San Diego restaurants within walking distance of the hotel. Enjoy light hors d’oeuvres that include food stations with a salad tasting bar, mashed potato bar, breads/spreads, and a small beef sandwich station (cash bar available).
